uRban Family

A metropolitan couple forms a connection with a group of adoptive parents and find their lives intertwining in unexpected ways as they share the joys, heartaches, headaches, and trials of parenthood in their inner-city neighborhood.

Synopsis

Chris and Deidra are no strangers to adversity. As an AAA (Asian/African-American) couple, they’ve traversed their fair share of uncomfortable conversations and hostile altercations. But the couple always has each other’s back through it all. So, as they embark on their new journey of adopting, the couple’s plan gets derailed when they discover that Deidra is pregnant and the daughter they wanted to adopt has a sister.

Meet the Families

What’s an Urban Family? a group of people, living in inner cities, who have become just as good as family members through sharing time, space, and life together but who are not related to each other and act as each others’ support group.

Hung Family

After an arduous overseas adoption and an adventitious pregnancy, Deidra and Chris begin their parenting journey with three kids and no manual. As the weight of parenthood hits them, they find solace in a community of adoptive families.

Baldwin Family
African-American husband and wife Alexis and Jamal Baldwin have been foster and adoptive parents for over nine years. They are considered the founders of the group and the quintessential power couple. Still, everything changes when they decide to adopt their son’s “white friend.”
Jones-Miller Family

An interracial gay couple, Antwan and Zane, raising a little girl with no family support, navigates the complexities of being working dads with a daughter that challenges them to reshape how they see the world.

Cortez Family

After losing two children in a car accident, Carla, Lorenzo, and their daughter Catalina try to rebuild their family back together one day at a time. Lorenzo believes that adopting could be the key to uniting his family again, but Carla isn’t so sure and questions if she’s a good mother.

Becker Family

As a straight white Conservative Christian couple, Sean and Beverly get unjustifiably branded as the “White Savior” couple. As they face the challenges of being a transracial family, they learn to lean on their friends to help guide them through the unfamiliar territory of diversity

Dunken Family
Nadia joins the adoptive support group in hopes that her husband, Ryan, can have someone to turn to when she’s gone. Ryan is resistant to the group because he doesn’t want to think of anything or anyone replacing his wife as he prepares to raise two kids on his own.
